While Christmas and New Year’s celebrations are done, don’t think the holiday festivities are over just yet! In just a few days, another exciting celebration begins: Three Kings’ Day, also known as Día de Reyes. Marking the Epiphany on January 6th, this festive day commemorates the visit of Melchior, Caspar, and Balthazar, who brought gifts of gold, frankincense, and myrrh to Jesus. It is celebrated in many countries around the world.

In Mexican culture, for instance, this day holds a great significance. Every year, families and friends gather to commemorate this special occasion. At Pangea, we’re thrilled to give you fun ideas to make the most of this celebration!

Gifts

The magic of waking up to presents on a special morning is an unforgettable experience for many. In Mexico, this excitement is part of the Día de los Reyes’ tradition, where children eagerly await the arrival of gifts from the three kings. As part of this beloved custom, kids leave their shoes outside on the evening of January 5th. The next morning, they delight in finding them filled with candies, toys, and small treasures. This charming tradition is a wonderful way to share the spirit of the holiday with the children in your life. Whether you’re a parent, or family member, decorating shoes with kids is a heartwarming way to celebrate this special day together.

Food

No celebration of Three Kings’ Day is complete without a delicious Rosca de Reyes, a traditional Mexican sweet bread. This oval-shaped treat represents the crowns of the three wise men and is filled with dried fruits, adding natural sweetness and texture. The excitement of Rosca de Reyes lies in the surprise within. A small plastic figure of baby Jesus is hidden inside the dough, and whoever receives the slice with the figure is tasked with hosting the next party, often on February 2nd, known as Día de la Candelaria (Candlemas Day). To add an extra layer of fun, you can include multiple baby Jesus figures, increasing the chances of multiple hosts.

Family

Día de Reyes is a profound celebration that commemorates the importance of family, faith, and community. This special day is marked by various festivities that bring people together in a spirit of joy and devotion. The celebrations typically begin with attending church services, a time for spiritual reflection and connection. Processions and parades are also an integral part of the festivities, reenacting the journey of the Three Wise Men to Bethlehem. These events are often accompanied by traditional performances, such as mariachi bands and folk dances, which add excitement and energy to the celebrations. To fully immerse yourself in the vibrant culture and rich traditions of Mexico, consider dressing up in colorful costumes and becoming a part of the festive atmosphere.

Celebrating in the US

Even if you’re far from home, you can still keep the spirit of Día de Reyes alive. If you’re in the US, don’t worry if there aren’t any parades or processions nearby. You can still celebrate this special holiday from the comfort of your own home.

Start by setting up a nativity scene and adding the Three Wise Men to complete the Nativity story. You can also cook traditional treats like Rosca de Reyes (see recipe) to share with family and friends.

Finally, consider hosting a celebration at home and invite loved ones to share in the tradition. This is a great way to create new memories and share your cultural heritage with others. By celebrating Día de Reyes in the US, you’ll not only keep your roots alive but also spread the joy and spirit of this special holiday.
