AI — or Artificial Intelligence — is the science of making machines think like humans. By gathering and analyzing data at a fast pace, AI can help people and companies work faster and more efficiently.

Things that AI can do include automating repetitive tasks like email responses and data entry, improving processes and workflow, addressing customer questions, helping companies gather information to make decisions faster, and much more.

However, because AI is so new, and the possibilities are always growing, it’s important to take steps to safeguard your personal information. From research to awareness to additional layers of security, here are a few ways to protect yourself in the AI era.

Understand what information you share.
We’re constantly being asked to share personal information like address, birthdate, phone number and more. But remember that things like browsing habits, location data and personal preferences are often being shared behind the scenes. Simply being mindful of the personal information you share online and offline can be a good start to privacy awareness.

Use strong, unique passwords.
Cybercriminals are using AI and sophisticated tools to crack simple passwords and access private and sensitive information to commit identity theft or financial fraud. Use strong and unique passwords for your online accounts, or consider using a reputable password manager to generate and store complex passwords securely.

Enable two-factor authentication (2FA).
Two-factor authentication adds an extra layer of security by requiring not only a password, but a second identification such as a code sent to your phone or email. Enable two-factor authentication on your mobile device or on sensitive accounts to add an extra layer of safety.

Be cautious with social media sharing.
Review social media privacy settings for each account and limit the amount of personal information you share publicly.Even something as simple as a celebratory post, can lead to sensitive information such as your full birthdate, home address, or financial details to be found by AI tools if you’re not carefu.

Keep software updated.
Ensure devices and software applications are regularly updated with the latest versions, which often include the most current and up-to-date security features. This helps protect against vulnerabilities that could be exploited by cyberattackers, including those using AI tools.

Encrypt sensitive data.
When storing or transmitting sensitive information like financial data and health records, use encryption to protect it from unauthorized access. While most large platforms like Google and Amazon (as well as hospitals and other places that deal with sensitive information) already use encryption, there are free services available online to add another layer of protection.

Be wary of phishing attempts.
Be cautious of unsolicited emails, messages or phone calls asking for your personal information, or prompting you to click on suspicious links. Verify the source before responding or providing any information. Often, a quick online search of a company name can reveal if they are legitimate or not.

Review app permissions.
Most apps allow users to opt in to sharing information, so it’s important to regularly review and update the permissions granted to apps on your devices. Only allow access to necessary data and functionalities required for the app’s purpose.

Use privacy tools and services.
Consider using privacy-focused tools and services, such as virtual private networks (VPNs) for browsing, or use encrypted messaging apps to enhance your online privacy and communication.

Educate yourself about AI and privacy.
AI is growing quickly and always changing, so stay informed about how AI technologies may impact your privacy. Take an extra moment to understand the policies and practices of companies and services you use, particularly those that you know are leveraging AI.

Monitor your accounts regularly.
Stay on top of financial accounts, credit reports and online accounts for suspicious activity. The earlier you catch any suspicious actions, the easier it to take action, so promptly report any unauthorized transactions or breaches to the relevant authorities.

Remember that when it comes to AI, it’s important to stay proactive to protective your personal information. Do your research to learn more about it. When you mitigate risks associated with AI technologies, you can make it work for you.
